This is the definition for Forgive: To cease to feel anger at or for.
How do we get to the place that we are able to cease to feel anger towards those that wrong us?
Answer: When we receive forgiveness freely, we will freely forgive.
Matthew 18: 21-35 (Msg)
A Story About Forgiveness
21At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, "Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?"
22Jesus replied, "Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven.
23-25"The kingdom of God is like a king who decided to square accounts with his servants. As he got under way, one servant was brought before him who had run up a debt of a hundred thousand dollars. He couldn't pay up, so the king ordered the man, along with his wife, children, and goods, to be auctioned off at the slave market.
26-27"The poor wretch threw himself at the king's feet and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.' Touched by his plea, the king let him off, erasing the debt.
28"The servant was no sooner out of the room when he came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him ten dollars. He seized him by the throat and demanded, 'Pay up. Now!'
29-31"The poor wretch threw himself down and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.' But he wouldn't do it. He had him arrested and put in jail until the debt was paid. When the other servants saw this going on, they were outraged and brought a detailed report to the king.
32-35"The king summoned the man and said, 'You evil servant! I forgave your entire debt when you begged me for mercy. Shouldn't you be compelled to be merciful to your fellow servant who asked for mercy?' The king was furious and put the screws to the man until he paid back his entire debt. (And that's exactly what my Father in heaven is going to do to each one of you who doesn't forgive unconditionally anyone who asks for mercy.")
Verse 35 & Matthew 6:15 states we must forgive before we can be forgiven; however, these verses were before Jesus shed His blood cutting a New Covenant and putting us under Grace. Because we are under God’s Grace, thanks to Jesus, we are freely forgiven.
Just as we are freely forgiven, we are to freely forgive.
The more we receive that we are freely forgiven and the more we insist on staying in right standing before God when we know we have blown it by choosing to forgive ourselves, the result will be that we will freely forgive others - We will refuse to hold things against people because we understand that God doesn’t hold things against us, and THE only reason He doesn’t is because of Jesus being the sacrifice for all sin in our lives, causing us to stay in right standing no matter what- this is Grace.
Hebrews 10: 11-18 (Msg)
… Christ made a single sacrifice for sins that was it!
... It was a perfect sacrifice by a perfect person to perfect some very imperfect people. By that single offering, he did everything that needed to be done for everyone who takes part in the purifying process.
… He concludes, I’ll forever wipe the slate clean of their sins.
Once sins are taken care of for good, there's no longer any need to offer sacrifices for them.
Romans 4:25
25He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
Romans 5: 18 & 19 (Msg)
18-19Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person (Adam) did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person (Jesus) did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man (Adam) said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man (Jesus) said yes to God and put many in the right.
To be able to forgive: either to forgive someone that has wronged us and has no intention admitting they have wronged us and asking of our forgiveness, or to be able to forgive someone that has admitted they have wronged us, but we find it hard to forgive, we must do one thing first… as believers, we must 1st receive the forgiveness that is freely already ours and then forgive ourselves.
The more we are Rooted in Righteousness, meaning: the more we understand that we are freely forgiven. That we never lose our right standing before God, no matter what, only because of Jesus, who is our righteousness, the more freely we will be able to forgive.
Because of the sacrifice of Jesus, His shed Blood, those that believe upon Him, we are forever cleansed, made Holy - only because of the sacrifice of Jesus.
Righteousness is not an action.
Righteousness is never obtained by works aka: anything a human can do.
Righteousness is a Person- Jesus. He is our Righteousness.
Hebrews 10: 10
10 … we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Romans 3: 23- 25
…23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.
Love = Forgiveness
Colossians 3:12 & 13
12Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Ephesians 4: 31 & 32
31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Many want to know: How do I become so full of love that I am able to love others, even the unlovable?
Answer: Time in the presence of God- who is Love (1 John 4)
When we receive His love, His forgiveness, and just as important- forgive ourselves- we will give out what we are full of = Love and Forgiveness
To sum it all up:
When we are full of love and fully aware of how much we are forgiven, we will walk in love.
These are the attributes of walking in love:
1 Corinthians 13: 4- 8a (NIV)
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails.
James 2: 8 – 12
8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
12Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!
What James is saying here is, if we will love one another, we will not commit adultery, we will not murder… we will in essence be keeping the law, however, not out of fear of judgment, not out of fear of not having God’s blessing, but we will be doing right to others out of Love, the right motive… we will be obeying the royal law effortlessly because we have chosen to spend time with God who is love, and in turn we will give love, which will be fulfilling the Royal Law.
Obedient out of a heart of Love not Fear
When we believe right, we will live right and experience all the spiritual blessings that are already ours.
John 14: 15
15"If you love me, you will obey what I command.
Notice, Jesus didn’t say: if you fear me, you will obey me.
Too many have been taught by fear tactics.
“You must or God will not…” “You must not or you will go to hell…” “If you do this or don’t do that, the devil will be allowed to…”
Jesus went about doing good. He went about setting people free. Never once did He make someone sick or cast a demon into someone- He set people free and that is what He is doing today.
FACT: We love God because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19)
The importance of receiving God’s Love
The #1 reason why people, even spiritual leaders, fall into immorality is due to not staying in close/ intimate fellowship with God, who is Love.
When we are not full of love, we will revert to our human nature of selfishness and as a result we will hurt people.
Immorality is the result of selfishness, and is a direct reflection of a person’s relationship with God.
Encouragement: Spend time in God’s presence; allow Him to love on you. Chose to believe you are righteous, not by anything you say or do, but only because of Jesus. Receive the forgiveness that is already ours.
Important: Never, no matter what, allow any ‘feelings’ keep you from getting into the presence of God. This is the enemies trick to pull you away from the very connection that empowers us to do, be and stay in the will of God, and this comes from being connected with God on a daily basis.
Romans 8: 1
Therefore there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
The Message version says it like this:
Romans 8: 1 (Msg)
1-2With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ's being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death.
3-4God went for the jugular when he sent his own Son. He didn't deal with the problem as something remote and unimportant. In his Son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all. The law code, weakened as it always was by fractured human nature, could never have done that.
The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead of a deep healing of it. And now what the law code asked for but we couldn't deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us.
5-8Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God's action in them find that God's Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life.
We are loved & we are forgiven. Believe it - Receive it- Live it!
